Five Things Friday

25 Apr

I am so happy that today is Friday because this week seemed to drag like no other. There are lots of exciting things going on in my life and I am very excited to tell you guys about them.

1. Tomorrow is my first 5K EVER! I am running Color Me Rad tomorrow and although I am quite nervous, it should be a fun time. I’m still not exactly sure what I’m wearing but I will figure that part out. Also, I finally made it to 3.1 miles on the treadmill on Tuesday so I’m excited to know that I should actually be able to finish the race.

I was WAY excited about this

I was WAY excited about this

2. We made one of the best meals that I have ever had before this week. On Monday, Dan and I made Caitlin’s Chicken Veggie Barley Bake and it was to die for! It has lasted us through about three dinners and four lunches for me through the rest of the week which has been great. Usually I get sick of leftovers pretty quickly but this meal is so flavorful and filling that I am literally excited every time I get to eat it (I’m weird I know). It also doesn’t hurt that it is filled with healthy ingredients such as black beans, chicken, and Brussels sprouts. I recommend that you made this ASAP and it would even be something that you could probably freeze and have at a later point in time as well.

I can't wait to make this deliciousness again

3. Softball season has started once again even though the weather doesn’t seem to realize that it’s supposed to be spring. Wednesday night was our first game and we did lose but it was a lot of fun and so great to see everyone again. It was about 40 degrees outside with the wind chill (and boy was it windy!) so hopefully it warms up soon so we don’t have to wear five layers to every game. I don’t believe I have mentioned it before but I co-manage the team which basically means that I keep the scorebook and cheer like a maniac 🙂

But really...

But really…

4. Speaking of warm weather, our next cruise is coming up quickly and I cannot WAIT! Work has been so busy and the weather has been crappy and I just can’t wait to get out of here for eight whole days with Dan and just relax and soak up the warmth. Our cruise departs out of NYC on May 4th and we port in Grand Turk, St. Thomas, and San Juan. I really need to start packing soon and I still have a lot of stuff to get but most of that will be done by the end of the weekend.

I can't wait to be back here SO soon

I can’t wait to be back here SO soon

5. Sunday is our first free day with nothing planned in forever. It seems like we have just been go, go, go for weeks now and I am excited to not have anything to do. I mean we do have a lot of errands for the cruise but that is fun busy work in my opinion because there is not a mad rush to be somewhere. We also have a TON of shows to catch up on so hopefully we will get that done as well.

Alright, well time to get ready for work! Have a great weekend!

Easter Weekend Recap

22 Apr

Happy Tuesday Everyone! I hope every who celebrates had a wonderful Passover and/or Easter weekend! This post is going to be short and sweet since I am very pressed for time.

Marvelous is… taking Saturday off of work to go to Rhode Island for Dan’s stepfather’s family’s Passover celebration. I always enjoy visiting with his family and heading out to Rhode Island, especially on a beautiful day like Saturday! It was warm and sunny and we were able to sit outside and enjoy some appetizers and wine before the Seder. The food that was prepared was beef brisket, matzo ball soup, and some amazing spinach and carrot casserole. We couldn’t hang out too long after dinner because we had to head back home for a party.

It was literally a perfect day

Matzo Ball soup.. Yum!

Marvelous is… our friend Brian’s surprise 30th birthday party. Although we didn’t make it home in time for the surprise, we certainly didn’t miss any of the fun! It was held at a duckpin bowling alley where Brian bowls in a league every Thursday night. There was also laser tag which several of our friends enjoy playing while others bowled for a couple of hours. The night was so much fun and it’s always great to be able to spend time with our close friends 🙂

Marvelous is… the busiest (but still very fun) Easter Sunday we have ever had. We counted at the end of the night and including the several stops made at home in between, we made about 16 stops throughout the day. We saw pretty much all of both of our families and even some of our friends too at the end of the night. There were a lot of meals eaten including Chinese food with Dan’s parents who didn’t want to cook after spending all day Saturday in Rhode Island. It was a great holiday and although I feel like I’m going to be catching up on sleep until then, I can’t wait for the next family holiday!

Have a great week!

Have you ever been to a surprise party? Was the person actually surprised?

Did you have a lot of Easter plans or did you just keep it low key?

Marvelous Monday- Dan’s Birthday Weekend!

14 Apr

Happy Monday everyone! I don’t know about you guys but I am SO glad the weather has finally started to warm up. I’m sitting here right now in my kitchen with all of the windows open and it is glorious. This weekend was filled to the brim with many marvelous activities which I can’t wait to share with you.

Marvelous is… everyone going out to the Diamond for Natasha and Dan’s birthdays on Friday night. This was probably one of the most fun nights that I have ever had. Our group consisted of probably about thirty-five of Dan and Natasha’s closest friends. The reason for the joint birthday is because Dan’s birthday was the 10th and Natasha’s was the 11th and we share most of the same friends so its a great excuse to throw a huge bash with lots of people! There were lots of drinks and a ton of laughs and so many hilarious pictures. I love a night when so many great memories are made 🙂

This picture is priceless.. and perfectly captures the evening.

Dan definitely loved his birthday crown :)

Marvelous is… a trip out to Litchfield on Saturday for my friend Kaitlin’s Tastefully Simple party. We headed out there around noontime and it was such a beautiful day for a long drive. While I was attending the Tastefully Simple party with the ladies, Dan went dirt-biking and quad-ing (is that a word?) with Kaitlin’s fiancée Quentin. He LOVED it. The consultant for Kaitlin’s party did such an amazing job and I was so impressed that I ended up booking my own party in June. We were able to sample the entire catalogue and I purchased a few goodies including some more Garlic Garlic seasoning along with Bacon Bacon seasoning and a Fuzzy Navel drink mix bucket that will be perfect for summertime. After the party, Kaitlin, Carlee, and I all sat outside on the patio and soaked up the warmth and chatted away. It was an absolutely perfect afternoon.

Marvelous is… a girls dinner at Bricco Trattoria in Glastonbury on Saturday night. Since the boys were all attending a stag for a friend who is getting married soon, Melissa, Alex, and I decided to take advantage of the warm weather and walk over to Bricco for dinner. We were able to get a table in their café section right away and had an appetizer and drinks and SO much food for dinner. It was such a great time to just be able to chat and relax with two of my very favorite people in the world. Tomorrow’s post will into a lot more detail (with lots of pictures) about our visit to Bricco. After dinner we walked back home and watched several episodes of Honey Boo Boo which is a huge guilty pleasure of mine. That family just cracks me up every single time.

Yes this happened, I will explain more later.

All in all it was a great birthday weekend for Dan and he can’t stop talking about all of the fun stuff we were able to do. Keep an eye out tomorrow for my review of Saturday’s girls dinner at Bricco 🙂

WIAW: My Favorite Chains

9 Apr
Happy Hump Day! First off, I would like to start by saying congrats to my UConn Huskies Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams on winning the National Championship! That is basically the reason why you didn’t hear from me the past two days. I went out to celebrate the game with Dan and Alex and it was so much FUN! Anyone that knows me knows that I love my Huskies (UConn is where I went to college) and I love watching the games and seeing them win, especially this year’s teams. Anyways, today I figured I would write about something that I have seen a few other bloggers write about and that is my favorite chain restaurants. Now I know that chain restaurants are kind of taboo in the foodie world but I am a firm believer that not all chains are gross and unhealthy. There are always menu gems that can be found anywhere if you look hard enough.
This is a true story.

This is a true story.

I can’t even begin to tell you how much I love Five Guys. In the past few years, I have become a big lover of cheeseburgers and this place is at the top of my list for a fast food burger. I don’t go here too often but when I do, it is definitely a special treat. I usually get a Little Cheeseburger with lettuce, tomato, pickles, ketchup, and mustard. I always tell myself that I won’t get fries but as soon as I walk in the door and smell them, I can’t resist. The one thing I love about Five Guys is how fresh, local, and plentiful their ingredients are, which is extremely rare for a fast food restaurant. I am a big lover of as many toppings as possible on my sandwiches and burgers (especially healthy toppings) and this place definitely does that for me.
Got this from google :)

Got this from google 🙂

Every few weeks or so I find myself with a huge craving for Mexican food and I just have to have it. Now I know that I could easily replicate this food at home but sometimes I want to forgo that effort and be able to spend more time on the couch catching up on my DVR. Moe’s is a great example of a fast food restaurant in which it is totally possible to get a healthy and delicious meal at a decent price. I used to get a burrito every single time, but now that I am trying to be more health conscious I have been getting a burrito bowl and just filling it to the max with all kinds of veggies. I usually get pulled pork, a little bit of rice, black beans, lettuce, pico de gallo, black olives, corn salsa, guacamole, and cheese. This is a good-sized lunch/dinner that keeps me full for hours.
I recently rediscovered Ruby Tuesday on a trip to a mall in our area with my friend Natasha. The mall didn’t really have any other sit down options so we decided to go there and I am so glad we did. I hadn’t really been there since back in the days of back to school shopping with my mom and that was ALWAYS where we went for dinner. I have a soft spot for their salad bar and I was pleased to find that their menu had become much healthier than I had remembered. I got the fish tacos with the salad bar and this was AMAZING. I had never had fish tacos before because I can’t stand cilantro but Natasha just told me to order them without the fresh cilantro (duh!). I would definitely come back here since there were several other menu items that I wanted to try and their salad bar was so filling and delicious.
Home of an awesome salad bar!

Home of an awesome salad bar!

Now this chain is one that I have only been to twice but I am already planning another trip since everything was so wonderful the first two times. The Bang Bang shrimp are probably one of my top five favorite foods of all time. There aren’t even words to really describe how amazing they are. I suggest that you go get some now! 🙂 As far as entrees go, I have tried the sea scallops & shrimp with the mango salsa as my sauce and this was so fresh and delicious. Last time we went I got the crab cakes which were also wonderful and they didn’t have too much filling like most crab cakes usually do. Their drink menu is also extensive and I always have to try something new when I go.

Five Things Friday: Long Long Week

4 Apr

This has been one of the longest weeks that I have experienced in a very long time. I will just start right off and explain to you guys why I haven’t posted since Monday.

1. I came home from work on Monday night and we were just sitting down to dinner when we noticed our cat Billi playing with something by the back door. Dan went over to look and noticed that there was water leaking in from the door. Within minutes, the water was coming in at a more rapid rate. He went upstairs to see if it was coming from up there and found that there was three inches of water in our neighbors kitchen. Apparently, our lovely upstairs neighbor decided to thaw out steak in the sink by running hot water over it and he had the drain blocked so the sink overflowed for about AN HOUR! The water came in through our light fixtures and saturated our kitchen and bedroom walls and ceilings. The restoration company has installed a bunch of fans and dehumidifiers and our bedroom is dry as of today but the kitchen walls are still soaked. The fans make it very hot and loud and I honestly just haven’t had the energy to write any other posts this week.

But seriously.

But seriously.

2. Due to the noise and heat from the fans, Dan and I were able to have an unexpected date night at Plan B on Wednesday. It just so happened that it was National PB&J day and Plan B was serving my favorite PB&J burger all week! We also ordered a beer flight where we got to sample five different draft beers. My hands-down favorite was the Avita Purple Haze. I loved it so much that I bought it when I went to Whole Foods yesterday evening.

Sorry about the crappy restaurant lighting.

3. I was kind of able to pamper myself somewhat this week which definitely helped with my stress level. Tuesday was my day off so I ended up getting my nails and eyebrows done. I picked a lovely watermelon shade of pink for my nails and that definitely got me in the spring mood. Yesterday I left work an hour early and FINALLY got a haircut. I haven’t gotten one since Christmastime so it felt great to get rid of those split ends that have been driving me crazy. I also gave myself a pedicure yesterday evening while watching Scandal on Netflix (obsessed by the way) so that was definitely a nice little treat as well.

4. The reason for all of the pampering is because Saturday evening is the Glastonbury Fire Department’s Annual Awards Banquet. I look forward to this every year as it is a chance to get all dressed up and have a nice fancy dinner with all of my friends. This year, Dan will be receiving his award for five years of service in the department (yay!) so I am very excited about that. The place where the banquet is held is extremely close to our apartment so we are able to walk there and then walk over to the Diamond after for drinks with everyone. I bought my dress for the banquet at TJ Maxx and I got a killer deal. It’s a blue Ralph Lauren dress that was originally $169 and then marked down to $50 and again to $30 on clearance. I will post pictures from the banquet on Monday so you guys can see it.

5. I successfully (and painfully) completed my first run of the year outside yesterday evening. I was looking at my calendar at work today and realized that my first 5k is at the end of this month so I figured it was about time to get my butt in gear. Since I got out of work early and it was so nice out, I had no excuse. I ran for about a mile and a half (well ran and walked) and was averaging about a 13 minute mile which is pretty normal for me. I had some horrendous side cramps throughout the run so I think I will hopefully do better next time.
