Monday Coffee Date # 2

24 Apr

Happy Monday! I haven’t done one of these in quite a while and my thoughts are pretty random today so I figured it was the perfect day for a coffee date! I also have coffee on the brain since I decided to buy a big bag of the Pecan Turtle coffee from my favorite spot, Daybreak, and last night we brewed a big batch of iced coffee for the week. I hope you all had a great weekend and that you had some sunshine for at least part of it like we did.

If we were having a coffee date, I would tell you… grilling season has officially begun and I’m loving it! We had cheeseburgers last weekend and steak on another night last week. I feel like I’ve been in somewhat of a meal planning rut and being able to grill again will definitely help get me out of that.

If we were having a coffee date, I would tell you… sunshine is everything to me right now. As corny as it sounds, I am just loving the beautiful days when we have them. Saturday was kind of gloomy but we still spent it outside at Olde Burnside Brewery with a group of friends followed by dinner and a movie at our house. It was a perfect day!

This is most definitely true.

If we were having a coffee date, I would tell you… active rest days are my jam. I made it to boot camp four times last week and I was feeling a bit tired and in need of rest. I took Saturday completely off and yesterday I thought about going to boot camp but I decided to go for a long walk around the center of town. It was just what I needed and I feel very well rested today but not like I spent all weekend lounging around. I also enjoyed my first homemade smoothie of the season which was refreshing and fueled my long walk well.

Slow and steady wins the race 😉

If we were having a coffee date, I would tell you… I do not have a green thumb but I’m thankful that my husband does 🙂 A month or so ago, I planted a bunch of seeds indoors and yesterday, Dan transplanted them outside. I helped with the cleanup of some of the bushes and did some raking but he knew the best way to plant the plants themselves. Thanks hubby!

beer and gardening

You can’t garden without enjoying a beer, am I right? 😉

If we were having a coffee date, I would tell you… I killed it on the grocery shopping front this week. I had a bunch of coupons and there were some great deals. I usually don’t buy much meat as it can get expensive but with such good deals, I was able to stock up on a bunch of different things. I rewarded myself with a sub from Subway for which I also had a coupon! #winning

That’s all for today! I hope you all have a wonderful start to your week 🙂

Did you do anything fun this weekend?

Do you enjoy gardening?

Five Things Friday: Strength

25 Sep

Happy Friday! I can’t believe how long it has been since I last posted but as you can probably imagine, my life is consumed with wedding related tasks at this point so I’m happy to be able to find even a sliver of time to relax, let alone write anything that isn’t a to-do list 🙂 I figured I would share a few random things with you guys today.

The last details of the wedding plans are coming together and we should be doing pretty well after this weekend. The tasks on this weekend’s agenda include working on the centerpieces and the seating chart (EEK). Once the seating chart is done, I know that I will be feeling a lot better. I’m really excited for everything to be done and to marry this wonderful guy of mine!

WINE IS LIFE, right now at least

WINE IS LIFE, right now at least

YES

YES

Being so crazy busy and having so much on my plate has made me realize that I am a lot stronger and can handle a lot more than I thought I could. Without being too serious, I do think that most women (and really people in general) underestimate their overall strength and what they can truly handle. We are a lot stronger than we believe and when push comes to shove, can deal with a lot more than we think we can.

On a more fun note, we were able to find time to visit The Big E twice this week and we had a great time with some wonderful friends on both occasions and ate some fabulous food as well. It is truly one of my favorite places to go and I look forward to it every single year.

Since I have last written, two of our favorite couples have gotten engaged! We are so happy for both Cheyne and Miko, and Robbie and Jenna, and we can’t wait to see what the future holds! Last Friday, we had the four of them over for dinner to celebrate and it was so nice to be able to share in their happiness.

I’m very excited for all of the fall TV premieres of our favorite shows! I’m not exactly sure when we will have time to watch but I’m sure we can park ourselves in front of the TV while doing some wedding related task and I can’t wait for that!

True story.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend and I hope to be able to post again before the wedding at some point!

The Smashed Grape: Wine/Liquor Seminar # 2

10 Jul

Happy Friday everyone! Today I’m sharing a wonderful event that we attended this past Wednesday evening. It was The Smashed Grape‘s second wine and liquor seminar. We weren’t sure we were going to be able to make it but our softball game was cancelled and boy were we glad we were able to attend!

Ready to go!

Ready to go!

The first presentation and tasting was done by Lelaneia Dubay, the owner and creator of Hartford Flavor Company. She makes a variety of liqueurs, all of which are gluten and GMO free with no artificial flavors. She started out making these liqueurs as Christmas gifts and her friends and family enjoyed them so much, she decided to launch the business this past April and her product is already in 95 establishments!

We tried five different flavors; cucumber, rose, lavender, birch, and chai. The cucumber was excellent and very refreshing. The rose was probably my least favorite but I generally can’t stand anything that has a flowery flavor, although it received rave reviews from many of the other attendees. The lavender was also not a favorite of mine but for the same reason and again, most of the others loved it. The birch was very good and she also let us taste that one mixed with bourbon and it was amazing. The chai was probably my favorite as it had a strong cinnamon flavor and I could definitely see myself sipping it. I absolutely loved her story and charisma and she told us she is probably going to launch a cranberry flavor soon, which I am very excited to try!

All gone!

All gone!

The next gentlemen was from a large distributor called Brescome Barton. I did not catch his name but he gave a great presentation as well and we were able to taste quite a variety of items.

We first tried a beer which provided a nice variety from the sweet liqueurs we had been tasting. It was the Ommegang Cooperstown Ale, which drew me in immediately based on the baseball-related name. It was a very light, summery ale and I could definitely enjoy it at a baseball game.

He provided very generous pours as well!

Next, we tried the Dreaming Tree Everyday White, which is actually singer Dave Matthew’s wine! It is a white wine blend of four different grapes and I found it to be very balanced but it was a little dry which was a pleasant surprise because I tend to find that a lot of white blends are very sweet.

The food was brought out at this point and we definitely needed some sustenance after all of that booze! As usual, The Spicy Green Bean outdid themselves with some caprese skewers, chicken salad served on cucumbers (my favorite!), sliders, bacon wrapped asparagus, and shrimp crostini. I have yet to find something that they have made that I didn’t adore and it is also great that they are located right across the street from us!

Anything wrapped in bacon is amazing in my opinion

These were my favorite!

The next wine we tried was my overall favorite and of course it included bubbles! It was the Ruffino Prosecco which was so easy to drink and had such a delicious fruity flavor of apples and peaches. The gentleman providing the presentation advised us to not spend more than $15 on a bottle of bubbles and to go with Prosecco whenever possible as it is usually much cheaper than champagne.

Bubbles are the best!

Bubbles are the best!

Last but not least we tasted the Ravenswood Vinters Blend Zinfandel. I was loving the fact that they included two blends in this tasting as I find them to be so unique. This was a surprise as it was very fruity but not at all like what I expect when I drink a zinfandel. It had a wonderful raspberry flavor and he told us that it is very popular which I totally understand. It had a long finish and would definitely pair well with steak and potatoes or really any kind of meat.

This event was so much fun and I truly love the owners/staff of both The Smashed Grape and The Spicy Green Bean. They already have two events lined up in August and September and we are already looking forward to those!

Weekend Getaway to Newport, RI: Part Two

14 Nov

Happy Friday! I’m excited to share with you guys the rest of our trip to Newport. It seems like we fit in SO much stuff in a little bit of time (my usual style).

After we had checked into our hotel, we got ready for dinner and headed over to The Mooring Seafood Kitchen & Bar for dinner. Neither of us were extremely hungry so we decided to just split a few appetizers. I started off with a Newport Storm Hurricane Amber Ale which was very refreshing and not as heavy as I thought it would be.

Sometimes a beer is just what you need

As for the food, we wanted ALL the seafood on that particular evening. We ordered the clam chowder which was so creamy and full of huge chunks of clam. I never order clam chowder but I knew I had to try it since we were right on the ocean.

Bowl of creamy deliciousness

We also had the Bag of Doughnuts and those were my absolute favorite. They were huge seafood fritters with a lot of seafood and very little breading which isn’t something you get very often.

That sauce on the side was heavenly

We also shared the Surf and Turf sliders which were steak sliders topped with lobster meat so obviously those were perfection and I wish we had more of those because two were definitely not enough.

The presentation was amazing

After dinner, it was still pretty early so we headed over to Brick Alley Pub to watch some football and have a drink. Dan went with Yuengling and I was craving something salty so I decided on a dirty martini which was SO good.

Those olives though :)

There was also a hilarious sign in the bathroom that I HAD to share with you guys.

Hilarious

We headed back to the hotel to catch up on some of our TV shows on my laptop and get a good night’s sleep which was VERY needed after a crazy weekend. I woke up very refreshed the next day and couldn’t wait to explore more of Newport. We started our day by sitting outside on the grounds of our hotel for a little while which was so peaceful and beautiful.

It was the most beautiful hotel I have ever stayed at.

It was still a little early for lunch so I went to another spot that Caitlin had recommended, Keen-Wah Superfood Eatery. After the martini and the beer the night before, I was craving some green juice. I had the Green Lemonade and I drank it SO fast because it was amazing. We also had to try the deviled eggs because hello, name of this blog, and they are my favorite.

We walked around and did a little bit of shopping, mostly Christmas related, before deciding we couldn’t wait any longer for lunch. We headed back over to Brick Alley Pub and our experience was nothing short of amazing. We started with the nachos which several people had recommended to us and they were perfect, with so much cheese and a lot of jalapeños which Dan was very excited about.

There were chips buried under all that, I promise

I had the Lobster Reuben which was pure genius because who even thinks of something that amazing? Dan had the Corned Beef Reuben. Both of our sandwiches were SO stuffed and so tasty. I can’t wait to go back there because there are about ten different things I want to try.

SO much lobster!

SO much lobster!

We did a little bit more shopping and then we ended our day with a trip to Newport Storm Brewery. Dan had never been to a brewery before he was very excited. We had such a great time and I can honestly say that I enjoyed every single beer that I tried. My favorite was definitely the Winter Porter because I really enjoy a nice winter beer.

I was obsessed with these glasses, and we got to take them home!

It was a perfect end to our trip to Newport and I’m so glad I was able to share it with you guys!

Marvelous Monday: The Big E!

22 Sep

Happy Monday? Yes, that was a question because I’m definitely dragging a little bit today but a little bit of coffee will help with that I’m sure. I worked on Saturday and we spent Sunday at the Big E with a group of our friends so it was a jam-packed weekend.

I got out of work on Saturday and planned on getting our grocery shopping done and then heading up to Verizon to order my new iPhone 6 (YAY – ps. I have an upgrade and with my trade-in, it’s going to cost me practically nothing so double YAY!). We were able to get those things done except I’m going back to Verizon tonight after work since there was an hour wait when we went and I was able to make an actual appointment for tonight. After all of that we grabbed dinner at Moe’s for ourselves and Dan’s parents and headed up there to spend some time with them before they head off on vacation to Martha’s Vineyard. I devoured a Moe’s chicken burrito bowl with ALL the toppings and also enjoyed some yummy red wine with Dan’s mom.

Why hello there beautiful

On Sunday morning, a bunch of our friends met us at our place and we headed up to the Big E. We started the day by going through each of the New England buildings (each state has a different building showcasing their vendors, food, and such).

oh why thank you, I do every day :)

My highlight of the building was definitely the maple iced coffee in the Vermont building. I have no idea what they put in it but it was SO delicious.

I also enjoyed a baked potato from the Maine building which is always a must-have at the Big E. I wouldn’t hesitate to say that it’s probably one of the most popular food items of all of the food at the fair. I always get my potato loaded with everything (butter, sour cream, cheese, chives and bacon) because you only live once, right?

This was perfection

I washed down that potato greatness with a Shipyard Pumpkinhead beer which had the rim of the glass dipped in caramel sauce and cinnamon sugar. It was so perfect and refreshing on what was an extremely hot and humid day.

It's basically Fall in a sugar-coated cup :)

Although it seems like we spent the entire day eating, we actually did quite a few other things as well. We browsed through many of the other buildings including the Farm-a-rama which had the most adorable baby pigs snuggling with their mom.

We all agreed that these were the cutest animals ever

We also walked through the petting zoo and I took a particular liking to the camel because he was making the funniest faces the entire time we were in there 🙂

What day is it?! (Sorry I had to go there) ;)

Dan, Kevin, and Robbie also enjoyed a ride on the swings and I obviously had to get a picture of that because it was SO adorable.

Those are some happy boys!

I ended the day with something that I had been talking about trying forever, a fried peanut butter and jelly sandwich. This was INSANE and by insane, I mean entirely delicious and I wish I could have one every day of my life.

My Very First Newport Trip!

15 Jul

Although I could have included my recap of my Newport trip in a Marvelous Monday post, it was such a wonderful experience that I wanted to write a whole post just on the trip. I was so excited for this trip because Caitlin had posted so many great things about her experience in Newport for 4th of July that I knew it would be an amazing time.

I went to Newport on Sunday with my friends Carlee and Kaitlin to celebrate Carlee’s 25th birthday! We left from Kaitlin’s parent’s house bright and early at 8am to get a good start on the day.

All ready to hit the road!

All ready to hit the road!

We had to be in Newport before 11:00 to make it to our Lighthouses & Mimosas cruise that we had planned as a birthday surprise for Carlee. We arrived a little after 10:00 and we parked and walked around for a bit before heading over to the docks where our boat, The Rum Runner II, was docked.

Our boat, Rum Runner II (very appropriately named)

Our boat, Rum Runner II (very appropriately named)

This cruise was such a blast and I can’t wait to bring Dan and Alex back to do it again so they can experience it! It was 90 minutes long and we were able to see five different light houses along with many of the amazing waterfront mansions.

The lighthouses were so cool!

The lighthouses were so cool!

The $25 ticket also included unlimited mimosas which were passed around in pitchers. We each had at least three of them so we definitely had our money’s worth! 🙂 The tour guides on the boat were great and we all learned a lot of Newport history.

Cheers!

Cheers!

After the cruise we were starving and Carlee and Kaitlin had already picked our lunch spot, The Brick Alley Pub & Restaurant, which was a place that they had both been to before and loved. Brick Alley had such a cool and unique vibe and I’m so glad we went there. The food was AMAZING too. I started off with a Newport Storm Rhode Island Blueberry beer which actually had blueberries floating in it so needless to say it was delicious and very refreshing.

I want one right now!

I want one right now!

For my meal, I decided on the Lobstacado which was an open-faced English muffin topped with cold lobster salad and sliced avocado and toasted with muenster cheese melted on top. This was insanely delicious and I want to recreate it at home as soon as possible. The lobster salad was so fresh and it went perfectly with the avocado (why didn’t I think of that?). It came with a side and I decided on a side salad which actually had quite a variety of veggies and I went with ranch dressing because I had a serious craving for it.

So much delicious

So much delicious

After lunch, we walked around and did some shopping. I purchased a very comfy coral sweatshirt, a couple of birthday gifts for friends, a Newport shirt for Dan, and my favorite purchase which was a lobster Tervis cup which I am actually drinking out of as I type this 🙂 We also met up with our friends Mike and Daniela who were there to celebrate Daniela’s birthday.

I am obsessed with lobster everything

I am obsessed with lobster everything

I wanted to take many more pictures than I actually did but my phone battery died about halfway through the day so until we got in the car to leave, I couldn’t get very many pictures. Although I did get a picture of a Newport fire truck for Dan which made him happy.

Yes I was the weirdo standing in the middle of the street taking this picture

We wanted to head home a little early to try and avoid the traffic but we had decided ahead of time to stop at a vineyard on the way home because we love ALL the wine. Kaitlin pulled into Newport Vineyards and I immediately fell in love. Carlee and I did a tasting and it was wonderful. They had so many different wines to choose from that it was almost overwhelming! This just means that I have to go back many more times to try everything 😉

I love that glass, so cute!

It was such a great day spent with two people that I absolutely adore. We bonded so much and it was just so great to be able to relax and enjoy a day without any real plan in mind.
