Weekend Getaway to Newport, RI: Part One

13 Nov

This past weekend, Dan and I (and Alex for one day) went to Newport, RI for a little getaway. It was relatively inexpensive since it was the offseason and it is probably our last little vacation until our honeymoon (CRAZY!). We left pretty early Sunday morning so that we would be able to make the most of the day.

Once we arrived in Newport, we parked (for free – yay!) and walked over to Diego’s for brunch. I’m going to give a disclaimer up front that the recommendations for almost all of the restaurants we visited came from Caitlin’s blog because she has the best taste and we like a lot of the same foods.

Diego’s is an adorable little restaurant and they have $5 brunch specials on Saturdays and Sundays as long as you order a cocktail. I had the Diego’s Huevos which were out of this world amazing. The runny eggs mixed with the beans and avocado were perfect.

For our cocktails, Dan and I both ordered the Holy Habanero Bloody which was not as spicy as we expected but that was a good thing since we were able to enjoy the beverage that much more. We also started with an order of guacamole which was so fresh and delicious.

After brunch, we took about a one mile stroll over to the Cliff Walk. We walked part of the cliff walk and then toured the Breakers mansion which was very interesting and informative. We took a much longer walk back into town (ugh) where we did some shopping before heading over to Newport Vineyards for a wine tasting. Their wines are all so amazing and it was hard to decide on just one to purchase but I ended up taking home two bottles of Great White which is a sweeter white wine that is also very affordable at only $11.50 for a bottle.

Another place that had been recommended very highly by Caitlin was Marylou’s coffee. Although it was a little odd to get coffee after a wine tasting, it was nearby and we went. I had the mint chocolate cookie coffee and it changed my life. I wish we had a Marylou’s here because I would go there every single day.

I most definitely snapchatted this to Cait :)

We said our goodbyes to Alex who had to go home and Dan and I headed over to our hotel to check in. We stayed at the Hyatt Regency Newport on Goat Island which was probably one of the fanciest hotels we will ever stay in but we got it for only $70 for the night since it is the offseason. We relaxed and explored the hotel for a bit (duh, because fancy) and then got ready for dinner. I’m going to leave off here for now to leave you guys in suspense (ha). Part two will be up tomorrow so I can share the rest of the trip 🙂
